I asked Chikashi to photograph women in Tokyo wearing the traditional kimono for Purple Fiction no. 3... one of his photos was used for the cover. After that first meeting, there were a lot of others, in Tokyo and Paris, and Chikashi continued to collaborate with Purple. A network running rom New York to Paris to Tokyo was established, and Chikashi now plays a very important role in it. Quite early, he began doing portraits of artists, filmmakers and musicians who belong to a certain New York-Tokyo alternative scene. He also photographed artists from an earlier generation, such as Vito Acconci, Sophie Calle and Daniel Johnston... In the last few years, Chikashi has sent me photos that have surprised me: insects, flowers, puddles, spider webs, photos of elements of nature that survive with difficulty in the city but provide a moment of poetry for those how know how to notice them." - Elein Fleiss
